Road Numbering Scheme

Purpose

This document outlines the framework used to assign numbers to roads. It also provides the framework for transitioning the older Route numbers to the this current scheme.

Classes of Named Roads

1. Motorway
   1. Used for roads that comply with the Motorway Standards.
   2. Shall be sequentially numbered, in the order they are constructed (i.e. M1 is the first motorway that was built, M2 was the second, etc.).
   3. Spurs of motorways (i.e. a ring road) shall be three-digits and numbered based on their parent motorway (i.e. M100 and M105 are spurs of M1, M300 is a spur of M3, M340 is a spur of M34).
2. A-Road
   1. Used for roads that do not comply with the Motorway Standards.
   2. The first digit of the number is determined using Table 1 in Appendix A.
   3. One digit A-Roads are primary roads which span A-Road zones.
   4. Two digit A-Roads are secondary routes which generally remain in a single A-Road zone, but still link key locations and landmarks.
   5. Three digit A-Roads are tertiary routes which are entirely contained in a single A-Road zone.
3. Named Road
   1. Can be any road, including A-Roads and Motorways.
   2. There are no restrictions on Named Roads.

Transition of Route Numbers to Numbered Roads

Within Allure County, Pinecrest District, Woodbine District, Riverside District, Sapphire District, North Riverside District, the Town of Olds and Lakeview District there exist routes named using the Route n method (i.e. Route 2, Route 6, etc.). These routes will be transitioned into the new Numbered Road Scheme using the following method:

1. Unless a Route complies with Motorway Standards, it shall be an A-Road with 2 as the first digit.
2. Except for Route 2, all other routes shall be transitioned to the following format: A2n where n is derived from Route n. (i.e. Route 3 would become A23, Route 6 would become A26).
3. Route 2 shall transition to A2.
4. Route 3A shall transition to M1.
